Professionals are on tap, not on top
Recovery Matters advocates for system change in the mental health and suicide prevention sectors. The approach is neither anti-system nor anti-professional, but believes that systems need to be informed by the lived experience and that the system should be based on the premise that “Professionals are on tap, not on top.”
We seek to achieve system change through open dialogue about the issues and frank but respectful discussion. Our activities will include a regular newsletter to communicate views. We will provide links with international, national and local lived experience experts to help inform our discussions.
Recovery Matters is lead by Joe Calleja, an advocate for systems change in these areas.
About Joe Calleja
Joe is a social worker who has worked in child protection, family support, justice, disability and mental health. He is currently very active in the suicide prevention sector.
Joe was the CEO of Richmond Wellbeing in Western Australia for eleven years and has been an independent advocate for system change in the mental health sector since January 2016.
Joe helped introduce the Hearing Voices approach to Australia. Hearing Voices offers a peer support response to psychosis, and complements the clinical responses in the mental health system. He is currently doing the same in the suicide prevention area with the introduction of the Alternatives to Suicide peer group support approach. This is a non-clinical and non-risk assessment response where people receive support from others who are in the same dark space.
